Betsy’s Baked Goods started in 2002. Betsy baked cookies for refreshments for the Virginia Native Plant Society and the Williamsburg Farmers Market Manager asked her to consider baking for the market. It was summer and since Betsy was not teaching she decided to try a new adventure. The first market she attended with six products. By the Christmas market in 2007, there were 71 items available!
Betsy comes from a family that loves to bake, and can remember helping her grandmother and mother when she was very young. Some of her recipes are old family favorites, some are adaptations of recipes from friends, and occasionally from recipes published in the local paper or a magazine. She makes an assortment of cookies that are gluten free.
Among her more popular items are seasonal goodies – probably the most in-demand being Blueberry Lemon Loaf, which is only made in midsummer, when she picks the berries at a local berry farm. Some cookies and breads she brings every time she is at the market (usually about once a month); some items she bakes “now and then.”
Baking for the Williamsburg Farmers Market has been a fun retirement activity for Betsy, who hopes to continue well into the future.
